ONE: Williamsburg, Brooklyn
Baby its [hot] inside. In the midst of a very cold winter, Grace Myrtile Lowman knows this because the barista can’t keep her hands off coffee. And, thankfully! She with her business partner Jade Adamson opened a new expression in the culture of specialty coffee on the Presidents Day Weekend, Grade Coffee.
Adjoin to the trope of a ‘coffee &’ – this & being the barber shop – Fellow Barber in Williamsburg the two-woman operation works in harmony with Tandem Coffee Roasters out of Portland, Maine. When the subculture of specialty coffee is seeing its sons and daughters birth babies of their own its culture to talk about.
TWO: Opening Ceremony x NYFW [NY, Tokyo, London]
It is the beginning of AW ’15 for the FW ’15 fashion season. With the first stop being New York before it heads off to London, Milan and then Paris, it’s reporters, buyers, photographers and bloggers brave the cold as the warmth of fall predictions manifested in runway shows hour by hour staving off real time cold out-of-doors.
This season, Opening Ceremony employed Spike Jones in a twenty-year analog x B-roll photo retrospective ‘Please Use Your Best Judgment’, with images curated by its founders Humberto Leon and Carol Lim. His outtake photo of Bjork, with coffee mug in hand is an enigmatic, pre-selfie generation image sharing a coffee ritual, in progress, at its finest – solitary and stylish. See the full look book and dispatches from the retrospective here.
In coffee, flowers boom seasonally. And, all the time. It was quite special to see a few coffee shops surely among many bring actual blooms into their spaces on a day. For the time and extra effort it takes to curate culture and vendor programming like this, I say cupUp to such spaces from Pasadena to Michigan.
